Sag Harbor is a village unlike anywhere else on the fork. It was a whaling port — one of the busiest in the country at its peak in the 1840s, until the last whaler sailed out in 1871 — and the money from that era built the houses that still line its streets. The business district has been on the National Register since 1973, and the Old Whalers’ Church has stood since 1843.

It also sits on the bay rather than the ocean, looking out over Gardiners Bay from Long Wharf, and it straddles two towns at once: the village is split at Division Street, part in Southampton and part in East Hampton. Its housing runs from tight, historic village houses with original floors and narrow stairs to the waterfront homes of Azurest, Sag Harbor Hills and Ninevah Beach — added to the National Register in 2019 as one of the earliest African American beachfront communities in the United States.
